This movement is the only part of its larger work to feature the bass drum and cymbals, which accompany the piccolo when it plays the main theme in B-flat major and 6/8 (“six-eight”) time. Michael Spyres was one of four soloists who performed this section when Riccardo Muti conducted it at the Musikverein (“moo-ZEEK-ver-INE”) on May 7th, 2024. This movement opens with a “terror fanfare” followed by snippets of previous movements. At this movement’s (*) 1824 premiere, its composer was still conducting when this movement ended.
